Gacha Club may present itself as another RPG gacha battler, but there's a deeper layer of player interactivity and social engagement that transforms this game into another experience entirely. But if you were just to follow along the game's story track, you wouldn't know the difference. There are over 200 characters to collect, each with their own stats, ability trees, and progression path. And success in the field of battle means not just learning the basics of combat but also grinding your characters through leveling and equipment acquisition.

But once you get past the veneer of the game world, you'll find that there's a whole lot more going on. That's because you can customize your own characters outside of the gacha draws. Players can have 10 main custom characters and 100 in total, and each can be dressed up with a variety of different costumes. While it's mostly cosmetic, this transforms a core part of the existing experience into a game of dress-up. It's a small change that puts more investment in the characters and less work in collecting character shards.

Studio Mode is entirely devoted to showing off your creations. There is a decent selection of different backgrounds and props you can use to create your own scenes and vignettes. Social interaction takes center stage here, with competitions for the best-themed studio scenes and the ability to import and export characters among your friends. 15 different scenes can be linked together into longer stories and provided a sense of continuity through the addition of a narrator.

The combat here is simple, with still pictures and special effects taking the place of detailed characters and animation, but there are a few modes to test your skills in. Themed towers require diversity, as each one demands a fully developed team for each of the game's elements, while shadow bosses and shadow events take a more puzzle-like approach that pits you against twisted versions of the game's most prominent characters. Rounding out the experience are a handful of basic but engaging mini-games that provide you with even more resources for leveling and powering up your characters.

Fundamentally, Gacha Club isn't that different from other gacha character battlers. But it distinguishes itself through its unique focus on character-created characters and social interaction. The battles are there, but they're a way to coax out a player's sense of inner creativity than the core experience in and of itself.
